INFORMATION ABOUT LIVING IN KOREA
WHILE TEACHING ENGLISH
Living in Korea is relatively cheap if you are prepared to try Korean food and shops. Some expected prices for basic food items are as follows.
- bottled water 750Won
- coffee 3600Won
- Small bottle of soap 850Won
- Litre of milk 2100-2500Won
Assistant teachers are advised to keep their preferred breakfast foods in their apartment to start the day. Supermarkets stock cereals, different varieties of bread, dairy products, including yogurts and flavoured milk and many varieties of juice.
It is advised to have bottled water on hand at all times as the drinkability of the water cannot be guaranteed.
When travelling around Korea three forms of transport are readily available and cheap. Buses are regular with numbers and colours to enable passengers to identify the departure and destination point.
Subway is the most popular form of transport in Korea. It is fast, efficient and cheap. Maps are easily accessible through the internet, subway stations, bookshops, convenience stores and even hotels. You may purchase a rechargeable T-money card from any convenience store in order to get the cheapest fare for both buses and subway.
Taxis in Korea are also quite cheap. Many drivers can speak English and are courteous and helpful. Taxis can be hailed on most main roads or at any of taxi stands. For longer distances high speed trains are reliable and still relatively cheap. Trains travel both sides of the peninsula and there is a bullet service between Seoul and other main cities including Busan.
As with any country there are many different levels of accommodation, from cheaper motel/backpackers accommodation to 5 star international hotels. Please refer to the Lonely Planet South Korea manual to see an extensive range of available accommodation.
